Nothing Trick

This is another great trick for kids of all ages...... who have good control and like to be in front of an audience . I know some kids who do this one it is a great crowd pleaser everytime. My Mom used to do this one with my brother "Slick"....he was such a ham!

If you have a soulful looking dog or a big slow moving dog like mastiff, great Pyrenees's, Newfies etc.even bulldogs. When you can play up your dogs looks this trick is even better. But any kind of dog that is very well trained can do this!

If your dog is a toy or tea cup poodle or Chihuahua, tell him ATTACK! Nah..he won't! Lets say your dog is really slow...well, you would ask him to do something that takes lots of energy, "SLICK Go Fetch! as you throw out your gloves... he looks at you with those big eyes and that look on his face and does nothing. With a bit of a stammer in your voice you say......SLICK, SIT UP AND BEG...... your dog lays down and plays dead. you REALLY ACT NERVOUS .....SLICK, HOW OLD ARE YOU? Now the dog just look pitiful or yawns, but stays in the dead dog position.

You grab the hoola hoop...you tell the audience..."This is his best trick..he has done this one a million times and loves it!"

Get yourself ready stance is right your holding the hoop just right..."SLICK JUMP THROUGH THE HOOP" Slick just lays there in the dead dog position.

Now your asking yourself ...geesh how am I going to do this it is really going to take months to get this all worked out! Well, I fooled you didn't I ! You already have all this worked out.....first all the commands are wrong Your dog has been following our training and tricks so your dog has been trained to retrieve on the words TAKE IT sit up & beg on your command is "SIT HIGH " or "SIT PRETTY" jumping through the hoop the command is "TIRE" "Hup" or just "HOOP" Second your dog's name is not "SLICK" and third you are not only giving the wrong verbal commands but not the proper hand signals.

So here is how you can put another spin on it the moment you come out in front of the audience a hand signal from you .....Place your dog in a sit , down or play dead mode. And then it is all about you and your chatting up the audience.....the trick can be as funny as YOU can be.

To finish it off you can give your dog the signal to go and get your car keys or go get something off stage or out of sight of your audience, the moment he get's there someone holds onto him...he has "disappeared" you apologize to the audience and your off the stage leaving the audience in hysterics......Really this is your act...your dog merely there to help make it and you the best act of the night.. or day! (The sky is the limit on this) Mom and "Slick" have done this one in so many ways and it just kept getting funnier and funnier because "Slick" started to really play stuff up too! Yes, dogs are genius at comedy too!

Poutine

ASK MAM'SELLE
woof@dogcompany.com

Dear Miss Poutine:

We have kitten ! I am not sure what I think about it !

O.K. I will admit it.......I was hoping for a puppy or even an older dog who I could run and play with...now that brings me to my question. A will say several times a day my kitten runs around the house like a wild "Thing" It is everything I can do NOT to chase her. I know this would get very ugly! I feel she is out to just have me thrown out of the house so she can have it all to herself.

Please help me before I go very wrong.

"Dodger" (Border Collie with issues)

Hey "Dodger"

Well it is true those felines are notorious for going way out of there way to make us look really bad. However ....When you were a pup you too did this same thing and still have those moments even now......welcome to F.R.A.P. attacks---Frenetic Random Activity Periods. With kittens and some adult cats these happen most frequently in the early evening or morning. These time correlate to the times in the wild when the cats would hunt. Your kitten, and thousands of others worldwide (shudder) all of a sudden get the uncontrollable urge to run amok for a few minutes. Up and over the couch across the floor , spinning & whirling then poof ! off in the other direction if your in the way your just a piece of exercise equipment.

Best to try to stay out of the line of fire you cannot stop this mini mania. She is young... F.R.A.P. will become less and less as she gets older. If you don't chase the little trouble maker, I mean kitten now...(you will get blamed for everything that goes wrong) and by that time you both will have worked out a nice relationship where you either completely ignore one another or you will be able to give sort of play chase and you both can enjoy it and the humans won't freak at you. You must just cope to keep your high standing place in your pack. Everyone will think your awesome and the best dog ever if you just "let her go".

Burn up your own energy when you play with your dog friends.....they all understand your situation most of us have been there or are sharing our homes with the felines. Don't tell anyone...but you will learn to like her, I have some cat friends I really like and it is mutual. However they are not like us.. they will not displayed affection to you in public. It will be a relationship behind closed doors. That's life....

The Doctor Is In

The last couple of months have been the worst I have seen in Victoria for foxtails. With the hot dry weather, they became a threat to our dogs much earlier than usual. When you get in from walking your dog, it is important to give them a thorough going over. The spots where foxtails tend to lodge are ears, nose, the pits of the fore and hind legs, and between the pads of the feet. For dogs with any sort of coat, when they pick up a foxtail it will work its way through the coat as they move, and can then bore its way through the skin. If they get lodged in your pet's ears, eyes or nose, it is important to take them to the vet to have them removed.

You can tell if one is lodged in the ear by pressing gently on the ear canal (be extremely careful as the foxtail can be pushed through the eardrum). If the dog cries out, it is possible that one is lodged in the ear. If you are not able to immediately take your dog to the vet, you can make it more comfortable by drizzling some warm almond or olive oil into the ear. This will soften the sticker and lessen the irritation. Also, in some cases once it is softened up the dog will shake it out.

During foxtail season, make sure to keep the fur between the foot pads trimmed right back. This will make it harder for the foxtails to get lodged. If you can keep all of their fur to an inch or less in length, this will make it easier to find any stickers that they pick up. When checking them over, run your hands both with and against the coat in order to find any that are lying close to the skin.

They can make their way a foot or more into the body once they have broken through the skin. I removed one from Ceilidh's front leg a month ago. I was lucky as it had only just pierced the skin, and I was able to remove it with a pair of sterilized tweezers. I then kept the area clean with hydrogen peroxide.

I hope that this information has been helpful, and continue to send in your questions..

Learning To Swim?

For all you "kids" out there...who wonder if it is true...
Q. Is there a special dye can reveal if someone has urinated in a pool ?

A. Since the 1950's such rumors have prevented kids from urinating in the pools. (This is a good thing). However , no such dye exists. As several in the pool business have attested to, it would be difficult to create an indicator that only reacted with urine and no other organic substances.
